Program Description

The School Based Alternative Program (SBA) is designed to serve a student identified with a disability in grades 6 through 8 who are not being successful in a more inclusive classroom arrangement at their home school. The SBA program is located in Sherman Middle School.

The mission of the SBA program is to assist students to increase the degree of control they have over their behavior, learn and practice skills and behaviors necessary for school success (and life), and facilitate the return of the student to their home school when the student has demonstrated readiness. This is accomplished using highly structured behavior and motivational systems, small student/teacher ratio and takes place in a self-contained classroom setting. SBA is housed in a traditional middle school allowing students, when ready, to access less restrictive classes with supports from the SBA staff.

The student and IEP team (including SBA staff and administrator) may consider a schedule split between SBA and the student's home school at the time of placement or subsequent IEP meetings. Referrals are made to the program directly by school-based Madison Metropolitan School District staff members. Several criteria must apply before a student will be considered for enrollment at SBA. Please contact SBA Program Administrator for further information on these criteria.
